What the hell is 3GP and Why do I need a Converter

3GP is the third generation Mobile Phone Video file format. Highly compessed to ease the the transfer of bandwidth intensive files, like video.

To quote Gromkov.com, "Defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project and 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 respectively, these standards seek to provide uniform delivery of rich multimedia over newly evolved, broadband mobile networks (3rd generation networks) to the latest multimedia-enabled wireless devices. Tailored to the unique requirements of mobile devices, 3GPP and 3GPP2 take advantage of MPEG-4, the standard for delivery of video and audio over the Internet."

So what?

Well I shoot footage with the camera on my Palm Treo 700p and upload it to my computer and sometimes the internet in the form of vlogs you see on this site and in emails I send to friends. The problem is that I use a PC to edit videos, (not really sure if that matters but whatever) and Adobe Premiere wouldn't recognize the 3GP file format.

Thus the need for a converter, preferably to an AVI extension or maybe MPG if neccesary.

Thats where the Zwei-Stein Converter comes into play. Its freeware and it works great. It allows you to change all kinds of parameters to export the video in exactly the format you need.

Now I can edit the impromptu footage into something more cohesive, add a soundtrack and sound effects, mix in footage from other projects or anything else my little mind can concieve.

Why not use my Sony Digital Video Camera for a cleaner uncompressed look?

I always have my phone with me and with my desktop computer currently down due to its refusal to send a signal to the monitor I don't think the laptop could handle files of that size. It already takes forever to save in Photoshop when I do a redesign of the wall menus at my favorite Pizza Place.

Besides which its still packed in a box from the move, so there ya nosy bastard.
